For high summer and resort inspiration, explore our list of the need-to-know coastal destinations in our recent Coastal Guide 2021, selected by WGSN’s team of experts.
As parts of the world tentatively open up to tourism, coastal resorts are reawakening. We highlight the new mainstays by region and pick the most accessible and inspirational destinations. In EMEA, Marseille has trumped St-Tropez as France’s coastal trend incubator. French designer Simon Porte Jacquemus‘s handy personal guide for the city is a must-see.
We shed the spotlight on the UK’s Kent coast. The new creative hub is home to the Turner Contemporary Gallery, a must-visit for a cultural fix. For a more reliably sunny spot, seaside lido The Sanctuary in Puglia is one of our favourite retreat spaces. Masseria Morosetat, which we recommend for dinner, is one of the standout examples of the minimal, rustic architectural style of the region.
In the Americas, The Hamptons has caught our eye, with new hotspots such as The Surf Lodge that hosts LoveShackFancy pop-up and Dolce & Gabbana’s colourful travelling airstream, while Tulum’s relaxed entry policy makes it a viable destination, home to our favourite retail picks Kaahal Home and Mr.blackbird Tulum, both of who leverage Mexican craftsmanship.
Rio de Janeiro, the ultimate resort destination in Brazil, is known for its beachside atmosphere and contemporary culture, with Arpoador the place to check out what locals wear to the beach.
In APAC, George Town, the multicultural capital of the Malaysian island of Penang, stands out with its namesake festival – known for its kaleidoscopic street art and fusion of architecture, as well as Gen Penang that fuses local memories into Malaysian cuisine. Billed as the “Hawaii of the East ”, Sanya is an extremely popular resort spot for local holidaymakers. The island experience at Danjia Story hostel comes highly recommended, and Busan, dubbed “Korea’s Santorini”, is famed for the natural reserves and the labyrinthine-like #gamcheonculturevillage.
