As eco-conscious consumers cut back on carbon emissions, commuters turn to alternative means of transportation like bicycles and motorcycles to get around each day. This movement has sparked a customization trend in safety accessories, specifically in the form of chic and fashionable helmets.

Moschino recently collaborated with Max Safety Fashion, a Piedmontese company who manufactures helmets. Some of the key points of this particular project, other than looking terribly cool, include comfort and style, with a visor similar to sunglasses, a leather finish and antiperspirant fabric. They sell for around 215 Euros, and the models available are themed “Peace & Love,” with a red heart or green peace sign, in black or gold.

Maison Martin Margiela also teamed up with French helmet manufacturers, Les Ateliers Ruby to help design and create their latest helmet. Otherwise known as “Blanc de Meudon,” the helmet has a solid white base with black doodles and line drawings all over it. This helmet will be sold in the ultra hip Colette boutique in Paris, starting in April.

And lest we forget Karl Lagerfeld’s F/W 09 runways from Paris, where giant menswear-inspired helmets were the piece de resistance of the show. Mr. Lagerfeld, in all his glory, also worked with Les Ateliers Ruby as well as Apple Computer, on his interpretation of helmets. They come complete with full carbon-fiber shells, ultra-soft nappa-lambskin linings, and an iPod hookup so you can listen to your favorite tunes while cruising the streets of Paris on your scooter.

Talk about très très chic!
