The American flag is constantly surfacing in fashion, and it’s safe to say that Uncle Sam kicked off the stars and stripes apparel trend. The term “Uncle Sam” was coined during the war of 1812, but the classic image, including the American Flag-esque outfit, was popularized by political cartoonist Thomas Nast in the 1860s-1870s. This flag wearing old man has influenced patriotic apparel for more than a century and who better to honor the workers and laborers that built the United States than Uncle Sam. Happy Labor Day from Stylesight and the Vintage Vault.
