Paris: The fashion world has been abuzz with speculation on who will replace who at the house of Dior, and in turn, at Givenchy and Yves Saint Laurent. One of the lesser-known names to be thrown into the hat is the Colombian-born, Belgium-based designer Haider Ackermann. Although he could not have anticipated the current attention, Ackermann delivered one of the most exquisite collections of his career – an impressive portfolio that should secure him a spot at any haute-fashion label. While the designer’s dark, edgy style is not exactly congruous with the legacy of froth and femininity left by Galliano at Dior, he does possess the unyielding sense of luxury and strong creative voice essential to a leading couturier. For fall, he confidently mixed jewel-toned satins, crystal-studded panels, supple leathers and plush mohair knits to achieve his signature willowy silhouettes. What sets Ackermann apart is his ability to reconcile opulence and glamour with the modern need for ease. Languid robe coats exuded ladylike elegance; kimono tops sinuously wrapped around and fell off the body in dramatic dishabille; and pajama-esque trousers had an effortless, streetwise attitude. Leisure has never looked this sexy, sumptuous or chic.
