Milan: “Studio 54 glamazons on holiday in Morocco” could have been the title for Frida Giannini’s spring collection for Gucci. Instead, she dubbed it “Sophisticated Seduction,” which worked just as well. Giannini’s recent attempts at pared-down styles were laid aside with the first look that came down the runway – jade silk jodhpurs, a gathered purple strapless top and a cropped orange blazer, accessorized with a bronze tassled belt and matching clutch. It was apparent that this show would be all about glamour. The slinky silk ensembles had a 1970s feel and a vintage YSL color palette. Guy Bourdin-style red lips and nails added a sultry element. The show shifted midway through to sand-colored leathers with swinging fringe perfect for the Gucci girl’s ultra-luxe Jeep tour of the Sahara. Looks became more heavily embellished as the show drew to a close – first with intricate gold and black leather embellishments for jumpsuits, jackets and skirts, then with a mix of colored feathers and crystal beads for standout cocktail frocks. Giannini seems much more comfortable with these seductive looks than with her attempt at minimalism, and the hordes of Gucci fans will be overjoyed with this ebullient collection.
