Summer has arrived full force here in NYC, with temperatures nearing 100 degrees today, there’s no denying it. Another indication of the first official day of summer, of course, is Go Skateboarding Day! All around the world skateboarders from every walk of life are enlisted to drop everything and skate. No excuses. Events, giveaways, prizes, and parties galore, if any day is a day to get on a board it’s today.
The 9th annual Wild in the Streets epic mass ride, sponsored by Emerica, will take place this year in Detroit, MI. Kids met at at noon in Hart Plaza to get things going. The session itself will benefit the Sculpture Park created by Power House Productions, which is, “an artist-run neighborhood-based nonprofit organization. Their mission is to develop and implement creative neighborhood stabilization strategies to revitalize and inspire the community. Their current project, RideIt Sculpture Park, is a do-it-yourself style skatepark built by skateboarders. The goal of the park is to create a space where neighborhood kids and adults can meet, play, create, build and exercise.”
Today also coincides with the highly anticipated, grand re-opening of the entirely revamped Chinatown skatepark in New York, now known as the LES x Coleman x Nike skate park, which will serve as the center point for the majority of today’s happenings. Situated directly under the Manhattan bridge, non-profit design firm Architecture for Humanity and Nike collectively formulated a proposal to utilize this space to the fullest. Together they awarded highly regarded skateboard advocate and founder of 5boro, Steve Rodriguez, a GAMECHANGERS grant to help make this a reality.

Possibly the most significant event of the day is the 6th annual Harold Hunter Run/Roll/Skate, where all proceeds go to the renowned Harold Hunter Foundation, which works to support inner-city kids who are interested in skateboarding. Vans is undoubtedly part of the mix as well, hosting events coast-to-coast, from California to Philadelphia and NYC. – Madeline Lee
