Global Retail Autumn 2017: Why the transitional trucker is a key denim trend

Just like that summer is over and the first autumn/winter deliveries are officially rolling out across global retail. Much like our Summer festival edition, the denim team has gathered more than 10 denim trends happening right now across women’s and men’s global retail.

Women- Opulent Embellishment: Surface decoration takes an opulent direction across women’s premium and juniors brands, as shiny rhinestones, sequins and bead decorations gain traction. This decorative embellishment transforms casual denim and outerwear items into festive, dressed-up options that are perfect for hi-lo styling.

Women-Transitional Trucker: The ever-popular transseasonal trucker jacket remains key for autumn drops, and is updated with cosy fabric-blocking and plush trims. Velvet, knitted panels and faux-fur collars are all noted, with bright tones feeling new. All-over iridescent paillettes decorate sleeves for an interesting hi-lo look.

Women- Berry Colours: Berry dyes come through as an important colour direction. Consider raspberry, cherry and strawberry hues to update last season’s pale denim options. Jackets, jeans, shorts and skirts are presented on a clean surface with minimal abrasion or trims, allowing colour and silhouette to stand out.

Men- Cosy Trucker: Versatile denim truckers are updated for outdoorsy autumn weather by lining the inside and collar with cosy fabrics such as sherpa, fleece and faux fur. Fifty-fifty splits of tonal denims are pieced together with no front seam detail and a single chest pocket for a minimalist take on the trucker at Levi’s Red Tab. Look to pops of colour against acid-washed denim for a youthful appeal, as seen at Macy’s.

Men- Destructed Skinny: Destructed men’s skinny jeans emerge in treated surfaces including overdye, paint splatter, and hypo bleach effects providing an alternative to surface print and pattern with an elevated punk appeal. Destructed holes and tears along the knee and thigh area channel a more-is-more aesthetic, while tonal destruction and mending offers a more toned-down version of punk themes, as seen at Guess.

Men- Embroidery Accents: Decorative surfaces carry over from last season, relying heavily on floral embroideries and patches in a variety of styles. Mirror placement techniques are most commonly spotted on yokes of jackets, front panels of jeans and sleeves on shirts. Replace last season’s pale denim with midnight black, muted grey and dark 1980s-inspired acid washes for A/W assortments.
