Gianfranco Ferré

FRESHLY FLUID
Milan: Gianfranco Ferré designers Federico Piaggi and Stefano Citron have done a lot to further the sharply cut modernism of the Italian label, developing a look unusual for the Milan runway. This season they announced a fresh start for their work, but luckily enough of their signature successes remained in play for F/W 13, including tailored smoking jackets with wide shoulders, tapered cropped trousers and swooping, asymmetrically wrapped outerwear. A new sense of fluidity crept in beyond the diagonal slashes and swaddled funnel necks, producing creamy silken coats and peachy satin dresses cinched with crocodile corset belts elongated and looped like tentacles. Evening made floor length gowns both sexy and elegant, their layered skirts full of movement and their halter necklines far more approachable than last season’s tiny, body-conscious cocktail dresses.—Nina Stotler
