New York: Giambattista Valli imagined an international love affair when designing his Pre-Fall collection. A chic Parisienne meets a New York City boy. The results were a mix of the hyper-feminine looks for which Valli is known (ostensibly the Parisian side of the equation) and more casual fare (our heroine’s New York wardrobe). Who would’ve thought one would see T-shirts and ribbed-cuff jersey pants come from this designer? But the fact that Valli is expanding his repertoire is a good thing, both for his business and his clients. After all, one can’t prance around in cocktail dresses all day every day. The simpler, tailored pieces looked fresh and of-the-moment, and there was plenty of glamour to satisfy early followers of the label. Valli included on-trend animal prints for both the casual and dressed-up pieces, adding a touch of seductiveness, while furs in a range of textures were all about luxury. In all, it was an appealing mix. –Joanna Manganaro
