General Idea

LAYING THE LUMBER
New York: The waning work of Chinese lumberjacks in the Heilongjiang Province inspired Bumsuk Choi’s S/S 13 collection, as rapid industrialization and urbanization pushes their one-hundred-year-old work to the side. Perhaps Choi imagined his collection a salvation for these workmen, as the collection was ripe with forest imagery revitalized via Pop Art color combos and slim urbane constructions, as though these updates might recontextualize this dying work, finding it a place in the New China. Fluorescent green camouflage, canvas and denim work coats, blaze orange beanies, and woodsy boots all spoke to this update, creating an energetic, youthful look shot through with the gravitas of a traditional workman’s burden. —Andrew Luecke
