GANT by Michael Bastian

New York:  For his second collaboration with GANT, Michael Bastian drew inspiration from Marilyn Monroe’s relationships with Joe Dimaggio and Henry Miller, creating scholarly jock looks for S/S 11. Wholesome 1950s and early 60s undertones, including tortoiseshell glasses, a shawl collar dinner jacket, canvas sneakers and vintage-y sweatshirts, stood out against retro Americana backdrops that featured an old movie theater, park boat ride and baseball stadium. Sun-bleached, washed-out effects on frayed chino shorts and shredded jeans added an air of authenticity to a decidedly coastal aesthetic. Playful elements on timeless classics, from the candy-colored pieced Oxford shirt and khaki shorts suit to the baseball motif intarsia sweater, kept the collection from looking too staid. The blonde bombshell appeal of the Marilyn-like models also signaled Bastian’s first time designing womenswear, a perfect complement to the GANT man.
