Gant by Michael Bastian

New York: For S/S 13 Michael Bastian steered Gant south and west to the Galapagos Islands, where he found inspiration in the island’s flora and fauna, as well as its most famous explorer – Charles Darwin. Hence, Bastian’s looks were both nautical and exploratory, with plenty of stripes and technical or active inspirations, as well as a hefty dose of local flavor from the South American Pacific.  Earth tone madras and canvas field blazers looked right for scrambling over volcanic rock under a variety of weather conditions, while teal overdyed denim evoked the sea itself, and ripped collars and ragged hems created a well-traveled and worn feeling. With some fashion editor’s suffering prep fatigue, Bastian proved that this oft-revisited American style is malleable for those willing to explore injections of foreign energy. —Andrew Luecke
