BORROWED FROM THE BOYS
New York: Promising young menswear designer Michael Bastian was tapped to revive the venerable brand GANT last season. His Men’s collection was so well-received that GANT asked Bastian to give Women’s a go. The seductive Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe was said to have inspired the inaugural collection. Though hints of the lovely Ms. Monroe appeared in painted lips and a single slim-fitting dress, the collection felt more tomboy than bombshell. Distressed denim was used for short skirts, as well as rolled up “boyfriend” jeans, and men’s shirtings in stripes and plaid became roomy button-ups and simple dresses. More borrowed-from-the-boys looks appeared with shrunken blazers, classic trench coats and a standout chunky cardigan with geometric intarsia patterns. Pre-rolled twill short shorts and a drawstring-waist short-all looked young and upbeat. The revisited classics and boy-meets-girl aesthetic made for a positive first outing for Bastian.
