Gant by Michael Bastian

New York:
Michael Bastian took his line for Gant to the beach for S/S 2012, delivering a collection that looked like 70s prep school gone to Maui. Corduroy camp shorts in bright turquoise stood out when paired with a red camouflage field jacket. Red camouflage was a bit of a theme for the show—appearing on cargo shorts and short nylon dolphin trunks, with its candy colored palate working to transform the military pattern into an Aloha print update. Bastian also showed plenty of preppy staples like lace-neck rugby shirts, and cotton suits, including a distinguished double-breasted number in grey pinstripes. A cotton tuxedo jacket bore a madras-style plaid with a faint, stylized floral pattern beneath it, the combination looking both beach-y and distinguished. “Go to hell” prints were also in abundance, including turtle and watermelon motifs that struck the perfect balance between prep and Polynesian. Ultimately, Bastian’s latest collection for Gant expands upon the line’s central preppy theme with a fun dip into 70s surf and sun.  —Andrew Luecke
