Milan: To celebrate his label’s 20th anniversary this season, Gaetano Navarra looked back on the last 50 years of fashion, specifically the 60s and 70s period that seems to be a popular reference point this season. The key catalyst for this retro revival was the 1968 movie The Party, a Peter Sellers screwball comedy that takes place at a glamorous Hollywood soirée. Accordingly, cocktail attire from various decades were the centerpiece of the collection. There were 60s shift dresses made from a laminated fabric that resembled linoleum tiles, disco-ready ultrasuede minis and chiffon halters, 80s power-shoulder sheaths, and representing the 90s, a sensible knit column dress. With such scattered references, the dramatic details that often characterize Navarra’s work – elaborate piecing, flashy embellishments and flounces aplenty – both united the collection and were its downfall, especially when done in excess. As a result, the more streamlined daywear looks were among the strongest in the collection: a 70s-inspired matched set made out of a denim-printed linen, cargo pants that looked fresh with adjustable zippered pockets, and a pleated mini shirtdress that possessed just the right amount of prettiness and polish.
