BRIGHT LIGHTS, BIG CITY
New York: Relative newcomer Gabriele Colangelo has drawn inspiration from artists, including Gerhard Richter and Jason Martin for previous collections. For his current offering, Colangelo borrowed from art yet again, printing painterly city scenes featuring blurred streetlights onto clean-lined coats and dresses. Texture prints were also a big story this season. They were employed in a variety of ways – pieced together in multiple colorways, highlighting plackets and cuffs of otherwise plain shirts, and running down the outer seams of pants. Nubby tweeds used for slim, cropped pants provided additional texture. Colangelo grew more playful as the collection continued, sending out tops and dresses made from horizontal rows of white, orange, and navy metallic fringe. The presentation’s final look mixed that fringe with tufts of white fur for a delightfully quirky yet luxurious coat. –Joanna Manganaro
