Futuristic Utilitarian and Urban Glamour for Raf Simons at Dior

Tokyo: Raf Simons said at the presentation of his Pre-Fall collection – “Tokyo is a place that has been and is so constantly inspiring to me, particularly in terms of the liberty people take for themselves in how they dress… It’s a place that is both extreme and exhilarating.” This was powerfully evident – from the futuristic stage that set the tone to the colour palette of neutrals juxtaposed against bold primaries. Even the materials played against each other – the practical and rough, mixed and refined with the luxurious – these were all defining features of the collection. Utilitarian fabrics such as wax coated cottons or traditional English wools were applied to garments with more masculine connotations. There was ultra modern shimmer too which played a large part in highlighting the intricate cable and fair isle patterns. However, the foundation of this superb collection lay within the structure of the Bar suit, here, it was crafted, transformed and reinvented in new and adventurous ways. This was a collection that nodded to the house codes but with an eye on the future. “In Tokyo I think of the sliding together of things that are glamorous, of the urban environment as well as of the outdoors,” explains Raf Simons. “This contrast goes to make iconic women in iconic silhouettes and  an idea of projecting into the future.”  An unforgettable collection that surely will be a milestone in the creative vernacular at the House of Dior. – Lizzy Bowring
