Milan…Dolce & Gabbana
Adopting a surrealistic take on life, Dolce & Gabbana created a playful collection for F/W 09. Choosing to keep away from darker motifs of the past, Gabbana mused, “There is a need to dream now and go beyond this moments,” Smiling images of fashion icon, Marilyn Monroe were plastered across duchesse satin dresses and ball gowns in monochromatic color schemes. Brights were integrated into the black and white palette in a manner resonant with Surrealist-influenced designer, Elsa Schiaparelli. Her signature “shocking” pink was seen on dresses, on contrasting sleeves and even used on a broad-shouldered shaggy goat hair coats. Bold silhouettes drew attention to exaggerated shapes of sleeves and shoulders. A mirrored dress featured leg-of-mutton sleeves crowned with a satin headdress reminiscent of 1940’s Hollywood starlets. Tongue-in-check scarves of elbow gloves, manipulated and tied at the neck, added touch of sophisticated whimsy to outerwear ensembles of leopard print coats, clutches and platform heels. Broad silhouettes were also seen on sheer lingerie-style dresses.
