New York…Band of Outsiders
Fashion Office favorite, Band of Outsiders, presented its most relevant, directional and, dare we say relaxed, collection yet. Inspired by yet another French New Wave piece of cinema by Godard, Scott Sternberg’s intimate presentation drew the likes of everyone who is anyone in the fashion industry, including some celebrity fans like Kanye West. Making a Chinatown loft into a virtual movie set, complete with props like vintage phone booths, stacks of newspapers, park benches, parking meters and light poles made for an amazing impact. The trademark “school boy” tailoring was still there, but this time, we got patchwork wool suits, taffeta tuxedos and amazingly soft corduroy. The tuxedo fleece pant, complete with grosgrain stripe, looked dapper when styled with a cropped double-breasted blazer. Sternberg fused casual with formal in an almost seamless way, giving us ideas about how to repurpose clothes from our own wardrobes (how recession-ista is that?!). The collaboration with Sperry gave us something a lot less traditional than previous seasons, with printed lace and eyelets on shoes and boots. We also got clip-on ties! When Sternberg says he always goes back to what it was like shopping in the boy’s department of Sears, he obviously isn’t kidding. It’s never been so good to be an outsider.
