GILDED AGE GLAMOUR
Milan: For spring, Francesco Scognamiglio imagined an elegant woman on a hot-air balloon journey at the turn of the twentieth century. The delicate blouses and floor-sweeping skirts, all made from translucent silks or airy chiffons, were an ethereal take on Gilded Age styles. Unfortunately, mesh versions of the looks veered toward the vulgar, but they were few and did not undermine the overall feel of the show. Jaunty suits with wide-leg pants and broad-shouldered jackets provided a structured balance to all the filmy, fluttery pieces. The palette of mostly white and pale blue, along with jeweled bird appliqués, seemed to represent the clouds, sky and creatures that his muse would observe from her hot-air balloon. –Joanna Manganaro
