Food: Turn Table – An Urban Farm for World Design Capital Helsinki 2012

As part of Helsinki World Design Capital 2012, environmental organization Dodo ry has set up an urban farm and restaurant atop a disused, rotating railway turntable.

The lot, located in the old Pasila railway area of downtown Helsinki, comprises a greenhouse, hives for bees and cribs for vegetable cultivation, with a summer café from which the grown food is served.  The space has been built using wood and transparent plastic.

As well as a café, the venture will host educational workshops, events and a market to enable the local community to learn about the process of urban farming and ‘the ecological and social aspects of food’, while potentially inspiring visitors to consider urban farming at home.  Earlier this year we reported on a similar project, Frisch vom Dach in Berlin – a former factory, recently transformed into an urban aquaponic farm.
