Following suit from the eight other cities that have celebrated this word-of-mouth tradition, the infamous Dîner en Blanc (White Dinner) is initiating New York City into it’s secret society on August 25th at an undisclosed location within the city.
In Paris last month, thousands of guests congregated at the Cathedral of Notre Dame and the Louvre, dressed in their finest white attire, without any public notification of the matter.
Bringing along everything they needed for a modern day al fresco dinner and enjoying the company of friends of friends, they went as discretely as they came. A private, refined, flash-mob dinner party that attracted global attention.
The key ingredient to this long standing tradition is the element of surprise. Just as in Paris, the location is kept secret, and not one guest will know where to show up until the day of the gathering. This US version is getting a technological twist by spreading the word through social media and allowing hopeful attendees to sign up on a wait list.
Only 1,000 participants will be chosen to join the fun this year, so the rest of us will be anxiously awaiting and hoping we’ll be in the right place at the right time to witness this romantically spontaneous event. – Courtney Schultz
