Fendi: A collection fit for Lagerfeld’s legacy

Milan Fashion Week Catwalks – A/W 19

After show-hopping – and a team debrief – the WGSN Catwalks editors call out the most exciting and directional emerging trends – and we’re reviewing our standout collections, too.

A mere day after the passing of the fashion house’s heralded creative director,  this was a collection that will remain a poignant reminder of a life-long collaboration between Karl Lagerfeld and the Fendi family.

This presentation infused femininity with the relaxed sport ease that has crept into the Fendi aesthetic over the last few seasons.

Synonymous with the Fendi name, leather came perforated so intricately cut that it looked like fine mesh. Signature details came in the shape of elongated pointed collars on shirts – the leitmotif appearing in various guises and forms; high necks, contrast binding that edged around collars and a statement bow at the neck that of an outfit that opened the show.

Tailoring was sharp cut with square shoulders that helped define the feminine form while a play of layers saw ladylike styles of fluid skirts embrace slim cuts-to-body dresses melded with menswear pieces.

Lagerfeld lived and breathed his craft until the very end and this latest collection will be an enduring and poignant reminder of the legacy of his work. As Miuccia Prada said –  “And now the next”.  But perhaps next time, with a little help from above!
