From chokers to denim, it’s clear the 90’s are back- and slogan tops are everywhere this fashion month. WGSN contributor Richelle Cyrus reports.
Say it with your chest. Slogans emblazoned across t-shirts and tops continue to grow in popularity as consumers seek to express themselves through their clothing. Slogans are making their retail mark, rocking up on tees, baseball caps, jackets and pants alike. This increase can be credited to the rise in popularity of tour merchandise in which artists are veering from shirts with their face plastered on the front, to more marketable items like their known lyrics, well-known sayings or album titles (Pablo…need I say more).
From the sidewalk to the catwalk, the increase in slogan tees has been visible via the designs on the current S/S17 runways and the street style stars outside of the shows. Designer Henry Holland from House of Holland(who made our London fashion week best social media moments roundup) used his show to promote the brand’s 10th anniversary with celebrity “parody” slogans, while Gucci’s memorable Milan fashion week runway showcased slogan jackets and tees celebrating love.
Switching over to the diverse street style that we’ve spotted this catwalk season, slogan tees have come in a variety of themes. From awkwardly relatable sweaters like “In Harrods going broke again”, to inspirational ones with thought provoking statements like “What’s stopping you?” and political messages with classic Trump quotes, the street trendsetters have used this re-emerging trend to express themselves.
We’ve been front row and outside of the best shows this fashion month working hard to bring you the best slogan tees. Enjoy!
