Hippie-chic SoCal label CurleeBikini is making a big splash with its handmade-to-order swimsuits while keeping its ecological footprint to a minimum. Designer Mallory Curlee is dedicated to creating chic, environmentally friendly duds by utilizing repurposed fabrics, local production and a made-to-order policy to cut down on waste.
Customers can log onto their BikiniShop, pick their fabric from a treasure trove of vintage finds, select their favorite retro-inspired silhouette, fill out their measurements, and voila! the team of nature-loving seamstresses will create a one-of-a-kind suit. The mindful company even takes care of garments post-consumer by offering a 20% discount towards a new suit if the old one is returned for safety disposal.
Appropriately titled “Gypsy Travelers,” CurleeBikini’s Summer 2011 lookbook fully captures the brand’s earthy yet edgy aesthetic with ikat-printed plunge maillots, sweetheart tops and teeny bikinis that are more boho-glam than boho-granola.
