Milan: Paisley has been on the rise lately, with both emerging designers such as J.W. Anderson and established talents like Stella McCartney exploring the classic pattern. But for Etro, paisley is a natural occurrence—it’s been in the label’s toolbox for decades and this season Veronica Etro chose a sophisticated take on the newly popular motif. Subtle placement was the key here, with tangerine toned paisley curling up from the hemline of skinny trousers or folding out from the center of sheer tops and floor length velvet gowns for evening. If it wasn’t paisley, it was a geometric repeat for shiny satin trousers, nipped waist jackets or menswear overcoats as well as accessories like bowling bags and silk scarves. Slim, fitted proportions left room for luxuries like astrakhan capelets and ruffled leather peplum belts, but some of the layering seemed overdone with chunky knitwear an unnecessary category for such a sleek collection.—Nina Stotler
