FLIGHT OF FANCY
Milan: Etro’s F/W 12 collection began on a formal note, concentrating on luxurious velvet trousers, brocade tux jackets with tails and boldly patterned coats. Stark black and white looks were accessorized with voluminous fringed scarves and slim loafers in one of the house’s signature prints. But midway through the presentation the collection shifted to a more casual direction, producing winners like a paisley quilted puffer jacket, subtle tapestry print knits and slim plaid trousers. These restrained pieces seemed especially appealing in contrast to a number of monochromatic head-to-toe velvet suits in jewel tones, many embellished with feather tails more suited to a cabaret production than a fashion show.—Nina Stotler
