London: One was hard-pressed to find an inspiration more off-the-wall than Christopher Kane’s Frankenstein theme at the London shows today, but Erdem managed to one-up him. The designer cited the work of obscure feminist sci-fi writer and schoolteacher Zenna Henderson as an influence for his spring collection. He imagined reptilian creatures and aliens descending from space and attempting to look and dress like humans in order to infiltrate society. The reptilian aspect was manifested through snakeskin panels pieced with lace or suitings to form dresses and jackets. Erdem’s signature embroidery added color to delicate lace. There were also lace flower appliqués and jewel embellishments, adding dimension to dresses and skirts. Copious amounts of organza made for an ethereal, dreamy feeling, suggesting that these elegant extraterrestrials come in peace. –Joanna Manganaro
