Ekies All Senses: Interiors inspo on the Greek coast
By Carla Buzasi

Don’t be put off by Greece’s financial woes, but head for the mainland – it’s just as pretty as the islands, says WGSN Global Chief of Content Carla Buzasi

With not one but two of WGSN’s senior team having dropped by this boutique Greek hotspot for their holidays, we felt it was time to share the love.

Greece’s islands get all the headlines (well, after its debt and financial woes) but the mainland is just as pretty, and there’s one hotel that has interior-designer junkies all a-buzz this year…

Country: Greece

Where: Vourvourou Bay, Sithonia, Halkidiki (www.ekies.gr)

Three reasons we love it…

1. The interiors. Three different architects worked on this boutique gem, ensuring no two rooms look the same. The furniture is as quirky as the rooms and spaces they sit in, with nearly every piece unique to Ekies. Poolside umbrellas resemble lampshades, while an on-the-beach treehouse makes a perfect spot for sneaky lunchtime cocktails. Every nook and sunkissed cranny is styled up with lazy-day cushioned beds or unfussy modern-art pieces.

2. The location. Finding a boutique hotel, right on the beach and within walking distance of restaurants and bars, is strangely difficult in Europe. Ekies ticks all these boxes, with the added bonus of secluded bays on a tiny island just a short boat ride away. You might want a hire car to get from the airport, which is about 90 minutes away, but once you arrive the hotel’s mountain bikes will more than suffice for exploring.

3. The history. Owner Alexandra Efstathiadou spent her childhood summers on this very spot. When she discovered, years later, that the hotel she’d all but grown up in was standing empty in the pine forest, she persuaded her father to help her buy it. While he envisaged a nice summerhouse for the family, Alexandra had other ideas. The result is a hip, unpretentious beachy hotel that still rings with the sound of children’s chatter, albeit kids from far more families than just the Efstathiadous.
