LADY SINGS THE BLUES
New York: After last season’s sexed-up nineties romp, designers Dan and Dean Caten went the opposite direction for Pre-Fall. They presented ladylike looks inspired by the jazz scene in Harlem in the 1920s and 30s. Elongated pencil skirts and body-hugging dresses were in heavy rotation, and feminine blouses added a touch of romanticism. Cropped wide-leg pants, especially the two corduroy pairs, provided a boy-meets-girl element not typically present in DSquared2 offerings, but they worked well. The Caten twins’ use of color was notable as well, featuring bright shades of tangerine and fuchsia that mixed with jewel tones and cool neutrals. The toned-down sexuality was a welcome change, and the abundance of wearable, sophisticated items bodes well for the collection’s retail sales.–Joanna Manganaro
