Paris: Dries Van Noten presented a collection that was strikingly different to previous seasons; here, models nonchalantly stepped, threading their way between melting columns of ice within which, frozen for a moment in time, were placed floral arrangements by Japanese artist Makoto Azuma. These exquisite blooms appeared as the leitmotif throughout this gorgeous line up, influencing the colour choice of chrome yellow, tobacco and olive, woven against the jet-black backdrop while the flowers cascaded over silhouettes bearing references from different eras. There existed a poignant message throughout this lineup where an unrestrained freedom prevailed with details drawn from Victoriana, Japonesque styling and the 70s. Dries infused these in to fluid sheath dresses, trouser suits and blouses, elsewhere, the humble Tee shirt cut in oversized proportions, appeared dressed up with Edwardian collars. Adding to the spontaneity were unfinished hems, floral appliques and an abundance of jet beading. In the background, the track of Madonna’s ‘Frozen’ played and perhaps too, this collection from Dries will be beautifully ‘Frozen’ in our collective memories. – Lizzy Bowring
