The Active Team is beyond excited about a new blog we’ve come across called, Downtown from Behind. The street style approach is quite fresh for sport and tackles urban cycling from a voyeuristic perspective. Bridget Fleming, who started the blog, photographs artists, designers, entrepreneurs, chefs and musicians as they ride away from her on their bike of choice – only using downtown locations in New York. Short biographies supplement the photographs, providing personal insight into the subjects’ worlds.
Streets seem spacious in Flemings’ staged photographs, and instead of the ubiquitous rolled pant hem and chain lock belt associated with tough and aggressive urban fixed gear scene, Downtown from Behind encourages props of the trade resulting in accessories such as a bulbous pink bouquet, a pig primed for dinner service and a toy gun. Downtown From Behind focuses on life south of 14th street and leaves the agro courier sensibilty uptown.
An oldie but goodie, showcasing casual cycling style and culture can be seen at Cycle Chic, an international blog that coins the term “cycle chic” to describe the art of fashion-conscious cycling, even developing a Slow Bicycle Movement to encourage enjoying the ride. Cycle Chic is originally based in Copenhagen, with additional blogs representing eighteen cities from Helsinki to Mexico, all promoting and inspiring expressive cyclists.
