NEW YORK…Is it stranger that Donna Karan showed dressing gowns (albeit luxurious ones) in her collection for F/W 08/09 or that she was not the only designer last week to do so? (Preen referenced Kurt Cobain who used to don one during his performances with Nirvana and Kim Basinger frequently seen in a man’s version in the soft porn film 9 1/2 Weeks). From this comfy at-home basic she followed up with a series of totally wearable looks that played on the idea of similar juxtapositions as the robes, rough with smooth, day with night and skinny proportions with over-sized ones. The palette was spicy, rich and jeweled tones. The evening looks also had the same sense of easy glamor; “effortless luxe” the designer called it in her program notes. Draped silk gowns with peekaboo sides topped off with wreaths in the hair that hinted at the classical times of Ancient Greece.
Farewell New York! London is calling! Stayed tuned…
