New York: Donna Karan took a giant leap away from the ethereal looks she showed for Spring. Her darkly elegant collection was mostly pitch black with hits of bright white, electric blue and magenta. Lustrous double wool organza was used for suiting pieces – shawl-collared jackets and skirts had a subtle volume. Pants were extra-slim with a slight flare at the ankle, echoing new silhouettes for bottoms that have begun to emerge on the runways this week. Shiny colored bubble dresses would look right for a young starlet, but slimmer styles – some with curve-delineating piping – were just right for the grown-up woman who Karan understands so well. More directional styles like an optic white shirt with exaggerated ruffles and a leather and fur coat worked well, demonstrating Karan’s continuing significance after her 25 years in business.
