Milan: Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana celebrated their label’s 20th anniversary with a celebrity-packed front row and an accompanying live performance by a piano-playing Annie Lennox. Along with an exhibit at Milan’s city hall, the duo continued their self-retrospective by looking back at the styles that have taken them through the last two decades — in contrast to many of their designer counterparts who seem to be exploring ideas of the future this season. The collection refreshed the house’s signature pieces inspired by their Sicilian roots. Those influences were on display with an all-white group, including linen suitings and semi-sheer shirts layered over tank tops and worn with shorts. Soft Bengal stripes were used for shirts and as contrasting cuffs on relaxed, pleated pants. Leather mesh, perforated suede and pieced summer sweaters highlighted the designers’ commitment to craftsmanship. The trademark Dolce & Gabbana sensuality was evidenced in snug tank tops, slouchy knits, and distressed jeans loosely belted with rope, underlining the coastal Italian attitude moving serenely throughout the collection. While 20 years have come and gone, Dolce & Gabbana’s amalgam of raw sexuality and traditional tailoring remains as viable as ever.
