FUNCTIONAL MAN MEN
New York: At today’s DKNY menswear presentation, creative director Garry Martin talked to Stylesight about New York as his constant inspiration for DKNY’s functional and streetwise collection. “I love the Mad Men look for men, I always have”, says Garry. There was a clear 60s vibe with slim-fit two-button suits in “Phantom” mélange stretch wool, styled with cotton button-down shirts and lime green dot printed ties — all for a edgy urban guy. But it was also very clear that DKNY is about form following function; each piece had some kind of versatility. The navy leather cabin jacket stood out and so did the coffee-colored bonded coat that looked like it could stand up to any kind of fickle weather. The leather was bonded and Garry emphasized on the technical infused qualities like bonded, neoprene and weatherproofing. “The palette is all New York. We muted down the colors with grey tones; even the greens have a muted wearable tone,” said Garry, “Each piece is flexible, ready to move from day into night.” There were the classic men’s wear styles like iconic bikers, anoraks and trenches — but denim-ized, quilted or puffed, and styled with simple cashmere knits. Subtle color-blocking or intarsia added modernity and a graphic camouflage increased the urban warrier feel. DKNY increased their accessories collection with backpacks, duffels and carryalls. This season DKNY dresses a man’s every role, because city life isn’t about the destination – it’s about getting there in style. — Celia Ingesson
