PARIS: Maria Grazia Chiuri’s quite lovely collection for Dior, was inspired by a number of references including Dior’s quote in “The Little dictionary of Fashion” – “Among all colours, navy blue is the only one which can ever compete with black, it has all the same qualities”; consequently, the entire collection was rendered in shades of blue. Gowns interspersed throughout were delicately embroidered in gold thread patterns of tarot cards – another reference to Dior while other pieces were dusted with sparkling moons and stars. This collection was a quantum step forward for Chiuri, and one that was undoubtedly informed by the close association she has with her daughter.
Youthful representations of streetwear items took a sophisticated approach along with the inclusion of denim and cross-body bags. References from 1947 also appeared in capes and overalls while a tunic length jacket belted over cropped trousers alluded to utility uniforms. The taffeta pieces, the midnight velvet gowns and the sparkling sheer georgettes were equally compelling, take the taffeta jacket worn over a full tulle skirt – shades of early Dior with bar jacket interpretations – hallmarks that will surely appeal to discerning millennials. – Lizzy Bowring
