Paris: Making a long-awaited return to the roots of the House of Dior this season, John Galliano was inspired by the legendary fashion illustrator Rene Gruau, whose work during couture’s Golden Age comprises many of the most iconic Dior images. Borrowing Gruau’s technique of balancing blocks of light colors against calligraphic black lines, the collection had a sense of the lightness only capable of being conveyed by a master’s strokes, with slashes of sequins and marvelous chiaroscuro effects that deftly captured the illustrative origin of the collection.
