Diane von Furstenberg

DRESS TO EXCESS
New York: Diane von Furstenberg loves mining her own considerable life experience for design inspiration, drawing from both her far-flung travels and decades as a premier social butterfly. F/W 13 took her back to the club with a collection entitled “Glam Rock,” imaging a girl who, according to the show notes, “…in a swirl of twisted chain-link, she steps into the night, lights flashing. With an effortless glamour, she winks at herself and smiles at her shadow.” In these clothes von Furstenberg’s customers won’t help but smile, enjoying attention-getting gold leather trousers, vibrant, graphic matched sets and sweeping overcoats, each ensemble an unapologetic exercise in excess. With bold cobalt, fuchsia, cherry and a whole universe of metallic tones and animal prints, the presentation’s varied textures—everything from velvet to suede, silk and satin—could have used an edit, but when extravagance is the message, any hint of restraint just won’t cut it.—Nina Stotler
