New York: Derek Lam told reporters half-jokingly that his inspiration for Cruise/Resort was Coming to America, the 1988 Eddie Murphy comedy in which the actor’s character, an African prince, comes to New York to find his dream woman. Though the inspiration was comical, the clothes were no joke. Animal print skirts, tribal striped sheaths and safari-inspired khaki and olive separates were among the many covetable items that Lam presented. Slick leather pieces were edgy and luxurious, while indigo tweed looks imitated denim and gave off a casual vibe. A standout dress, featuring a diagonal placket of buttons and a belt that drew in the ample fabric around the waist, appeared in both an olive and a blue and aqua printed version. Lam also included two swim looks in the show – a sporty V-neck one-piece and a coquettish printed two-piece with puffy bloomers and a tied top, sure to attract a prince, African or otherwise. –Joanna Manganaro
