New York: Derek Lam wasn’t trying to push any boundaries with his Pre-Fall collection this season. Instead, he told reporters that he wanted to go back to his roots, sportswear with a downtown sensibility. He revisited the two-toned pants and sweatshirts that he has offered in seasons past. There were also some covetable pleated skirts and a pair of killer cobalt blue coats. Lace was a key material, appearing as an overlayer for tops and skirts and pieced into a simple A-line dress. Pleated peplums accentuated a narrow waist. Lam did not subscribe to the oversized proportions that have become so prevalent this season. He focused on a slim silhouette, which allowed his precise tailoring skills to take center stage. The quiet, understated classics that filled this collection may not cause any crazes, but they are sure to do well at retail.–Joanna Manganaro
