Many of you indigo enthusiasts out there will be familiar with Woad– an ancient plant that contains indigo but in lower concentrations. Woad was used for dyeing cloth blue before pure indigo was even discovered – it is thought as far back as Neolithic and Iron Age periods. The plant also has medical benefits and was even used as a battle paint (see Braveheart!)
Jason Denham and Ian Howard of Woad Inc worked on small range of genuine Woad products including boxed T-shirt dye-kits and handmade scarves. -But Jason also managed to convince Ian to subject his Grade Slim to the full Ian Howard dyeing process. Hand-dipped in pure natural indigo on Ian’s farm and line-dried under the blue dome of an English sky the resulting First Edition jean is bluer than blue and as British as Mr. Denham or Mr. Howard. We love the concept, the story and the history…. and the product is pretty great too!
