London: Danielle Scutt is known for her indie creativity and edgy London aesthetic, consistently eschewing commercial work in favor of quirky references her fans adore. For Spring, these inspirations led her down a somewhat fractured path, stemming from a fascination with hip-hop culture, boldly declared by a t-shirt emblazoned with the words “Thug Life,” and marijuana leaf graphics. Scutt was more successful with refined nods to subcultures closer to London, such as twisted tartan dresses, skinny suspenders and boxy gangster suits. Though this young designer can synthesize a wide array of ideas in one collection, for S/S 12 a less literal, streamlined approach would have lured a larger audience. —Nina Stotler
