London: Imported from across the pond to breathe life into Daks, the classic British brand, American designer Sheila McKain-Waid showed a fresh new take on classic English dressing. Re-working the nearly 130 year old brand’s classic tartan check in myriad ways, from sophisticated slouchy outerwear to Great Gatsby-inspired slinky velvet numbers, the designer proved there are indeed new ways to explore the heritage angle. Aside from the stunning variety of statement coats, a small, soft minimalist story emerged through solid jersey knits, pleated midis and flowing silk trousers, balancing the menswear inspiration with unexpected sophistication. Panels of woven silks and graphic dévoré velvet added a handcrafted touch to the whole collection, putting McKain-Waid’s work for Daks on the map as a new fashion house to watch. —Shannon Davenport
