London: What better way to start off London Fashion Week than with a show by Daks, a 116-year old institution that has come to epitomize the refined yet effortless British style? Daks has built its long heritage on chic, wearable sportswear, and this season’s clean and breezy collection was right on track with the lighthearted tone set at the New York shows. Slubby cuffed trousers, boxy culottes and silky polos were made for leisurely strolls in the park; boyfriend blazers, fisherman sweaters and schoolteacher cardigans could be easily packed for chilly nights. For a more glamorous moment along cobblestone streets, à la Roman Holiday, pleated full skirts and trapeze-shaped frocks made for an enchanting picture. A little more daring were the knit high-waisted hot pants and cheeky rompers, which, when styled with prim polos and girly socks and sandals, looked more charming than seductive. A refreshing palette punctuated by slate grey and marigold upheld the easy attitude, and as always, their signature box plaids put a proper British polish on the collection.
