Cuckoo for Coco

Stars stepped out in style in New York on Tuesday night, decked in their Chanel-inspired best, for the New York premiere of Coco Before Chanel, a biopic starring the lovely Audrey Tautou as the first lady of modern sportswear. The film follows Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel through the trials and tribulations in her life and offers a glimpse into how this independent spirit came from humble beginnings to become the most recognized name in fashion. Coco Before Chanel opens in limited release on September 25.

In the film, Chanel’s inquiring eyes soak up everything around her. Her design sense becomes instinctual– conditioned by her surroundings and out of necessity– in which comfort is key and simplicity brings out the best in every woman. Having moved into her boyfriend’s home with just a few possessions, she begins to borrow his clothes and alters them to fit her needs. A necktie gets snipped and knotted into a bow, and a pair of men’s silk pajamas leads to one of her most iconic pieces—the contrast-trimmed cardigan. During a morning stroll along the beach, Chanel spots fishermen drawing in nets from the sea. Seeing the utility and beauty in their simple striped boatneck shirts, Coco decides to fashion her own. At a costume party, she dresses up as a boy, and never removes the guise, even after the party is over. Bucking the trends of the time and remaining true to herself, she forged a new direction in fashion with effortless grace. Her iconic look has become a fashion staple that never goes out of style.
