TWISTS AND TURNS
New York: Costello Tagliapietra always project an artistic, feminine attitude, draping their muse in flattering dresses touched with just the right amount of inventive print or construction detailing. For F/W 12 the designers played with both abstract pattern and fabric manipulation, swiping their halterneck shift dresses with bright freehand brushstrokes and gathering silk into folded twists at the waist. These quirky hand painted prints worked well splashed across slim matched sets, while also accentuating the asymmetry of tunic tops. Hooded blanket coats added an unexpected toughness to the presentation, and skinny trousers were a foil for several prim high-necked frocks. Although the collection’s enthusiastic draping occasionally created awkward silhouettes, for the most part Costello Tagliapierta’s simple and innovative twists and turns continued their digestibly offbeat direction for fall.—Nina Stotler
