Consumer: The Richmond Weekender by Right Angle and Foolscap

The Richmond Weekender is an event by Melbourne-based studios Right Angle and Foolscap, currently comprising a temporary canteen, market and cinema in a previously abandoned piano factory building.

Owners Lend Lease have commissioned the initiative in an attempt to temporarily ‘breathe new life’ into the space before it is transformed into a luxury apartment block and retail environment at the end of March.  They wanted to create a unique, cultural hub for the Richmond community and surrounding areas.

With former residents of the space including Channel 9 television studios and Heinz, Right Angle and Foolscap have invited the likes of Graham Canteen and Speakeasy Cinema and Homemakers Market to provide the indoor and outdoor-courtyard food and entertainment for visitors, reflecting the charming heritage of the site.

Additionally – proving that cultural spaces such as this needn’t be too costly – the materials used within the space reflect the constructional and temporary nature of the project, and include yellow, caged festoon lighting, cinema seats made from foam, and benches and tables created from scaffolding, that can all be easily dismantled and re-used. – Samantha Fox
