Comme des Garçons

Comme des Garçons F/W 2011

Paris: Rei Kawakubo described her current collection for Comme des Garçons as “hybrid fashion”, which was surprisingly straightforward compared with her usual cryptic phrases. Nearly all of the pieces in the collection were hybrids, elements from two or more garments pieced together. The half trench-half jacket was a key item, appearing in a range of fabrics, with and without Kawakubo’s signature bumpy gathering. The designer’s trademark polka dots and strips of black ruffles were there as well, borrowed from previous collections. Vintage scarves were pieced into one-of-a-kind dresses with a swirling, almost psychedelic, use of color. An all-gold finale might seem a bit out of character for Kawakubo, but her brainy version seemed more about the magic of alchemy than glamour or opulence.
