Colour of the month: July 2018
At WGSN, we’re often working up to two years ahead, and this summer has confirmed one of our key colour predictions from back in 2016.
Your colour of the month is Solar Orange (16-1462 TCX and Coloro 020-60-35).
Orange is back: Orange re-emerges as an important bright for S/S 18, evolving from the recent popularity of amber and coral tones. We first predicted it back in July 2016, as part of our S/S 18 psychotropical theme – a palette characterised by strong brights with an almost synthetic quality.
As always, the importance of colour is related to wider cultural shifts and trends we’re tracking across WGSN. Solar orange is a reflection of the convergence of the physical and digital, and the hyperreal perception of nature it causes. Colours are heightened and exaggerated, and deep, jungle tones appear to have been artificially skewed.
As this season has rolled round, we’ve discussed the return of orange here in London at WGSN HQ. Catwalks across the fashion circuit, street style shots and retail spaces have all provided confirmation of this colour forecast.
Looking beyond the fashion sphere, this shade of orange has newfound political relevance, becoming a key visual element of the message around US gun control.
Fashion week street style has been punctuated with bursts of solar orange.
From Tom Ford to Prada, established designers are incorporating this psychotropical hue into their A/W 19 collections.
The high street isn’t far behind its catwalk counterparts. From Mads Norgaad to Jigsaw, solar orange is appearing as a seasonal staple.
